Naomi in Tom

I actually really like this wing sleeved, backless dress by Tom Ford.  I think Naomi looks (like Helen Mirren!) really cool.  I like the messy up-do, and the double ankle strap stilettos. I bet the dress feels fabulous on.

racing luncheon dress ups

So what did I decide to wear to the Melbourne Cup lunch?

I went with the black and gold option of course, because I wanted to wear my Tony Bianco Alamo heels!  The are so flipping high (even for me), so I'm glad I didn't have to walk around too much. I love this Review dress (from a couple of years ago). It is such a timeless style, so it was nice to have an excuse to wear it again.

And, yes, I did end up wearing a fascinator.  Actually it's two headbands, worn together, that I found in an op shop last week.  The spotty feather is kind of retro cool.

There were some very well dressed ladies out yesterday, it was nice to see.  Everyone loves to dress up now and again don't they.  Well, until next year...

today I am wearing (and weekend review)...

This weekend was a strange one to be honest.  It had ups and downs. I was (and still am) overjoyed with my new shoes (see post below), but had the strange experience of rushing my mother to hospital with a suspected heart attack.

Spending several hours in the emergency room, in the early hours of the morning, after drinking half a bottle of delicious red wine, on top of a yummy Chinese meal, after the elation of my shoe purchase, was a tad surreal.

One minute I was sitting relaxed and happy with my sister and mum, thinking about heading off to bed after a very satisfying day. The next minute I found myself sitting looking at my mum, all pale and weak and frightened in her white hospital gown attached to tubes and monitors, looking very small and flat in a metal framed bed, feeling very emotionally detached... I blame the bright white fluro lights and vast windowless room... I sat there thinking, 'How am I supposed to feel?' and then, 'This is the woman who gave birth to me, who has loved me and given me a wonderful childhood and shown me how to love and be a good mother'. Then, 'I hope it's nothing, so I can go to bed because I'm actually quite tired'.  Thankfully after an overnight stay and lots of tests, mum is fine. And I can get back to deciding what to wear for Melbourne Cup tomorrow!

Oh, yes, I am wearing my coral/orange Portmans dress with a sunny yellow belt and nude heels. I felt like I needed some colour today!

hen night recap

I know you are dying to know what I ended up wearing to the hen night (okay, maybe you're not, but I'm going to tell you anyway!). I wore my pink Princess Ratbag pettiskirt (which always gets lots of attention) and sparkly heels of course!  I found a top at Ally that matched perfectly and it only cost $12. The pink plastic tiaras that we all had to wear matched too. Baby pink over load!

What can I say, a fun night was had by all. Customs confiscated our furry handcuffs at the airport (the vibrator scraped through). We ate chocolate willies and laughed at the other (oddly knicker less?!) hens party as they enjoyed being 'pumped' by the stallion strippers on the boat. And the club, that I went to back in 97? It was pretty crap and the floor was so sticky it was literally hard to dance (picture Kath n Kim - the wedding episode with Velcro on the soles of her shoes...)!

My overall sum up? I'm pleased I'm not in my 20s any more. I don't want to get chatted up by strangers. I'm done with falling into bed at 3 in the morning with sore feet. I think I'm actually content to be where I am in my life and am happy to just watch the younger girls enjoying their time having fun.

My final outfit choice.  It HAD to be the pettiskirt!

jay jays

Not a shop I normally frequent, but a sale rail of cute summer dresses at Jay Jays caught my eye today. So in I went to try a few styles on. I ended up with this spotty strapless jersey dress with pink or yellow belt, for only $15!!! Love it cause I can wear it with or without a bra and dress it up (with heels) or down (with thongs) and it's not too short (meaning acceptable for someone of my old age), and as you know, I love a dress with a little belt.  It's my absolute must accessory.

Pink or Yellow?

So pop in next time you're passing and snag yourself a cheap sun dress or two! How can you go wrong for $15?!! There were lots of pretty styles to choose from, here are my favs:

the Emmys fashion review

So it's all over for another year! TVs night of the year. All the glitz and glamour, dresses and jewels.  I couldn't be bothered to watch the whole show, as it always drags on, but I was glued to the red carpet special, all those lovely frocks!

I must say, on the whole I was pretty impressed.  Nearly everyone looked fantastic.  Lots of lovely, lovely gowns, in great colours and beautiful designs.  My two standouts though, have to be the gorgeous Zooey Deschanel, in baby blue Reem Acra and Kelly Osbourne in mauve Zac Posen - both stunning!

So here's my best dressed and worst dressed winners...

My favourite!  Zoe looks so pretty and perfect!

Hot hot hot ladies!  Gorgeous dresses, top marks!
Love these too.  Great colours, accesories and cuts.

The shockers! Come of ladies WTF?!  Badly fitted or just plain ugly!!!

how to wear colour...

The Nylon/Sony dinner party in Beverly Hills last night gave us all a perfect example of how to wear brights well and not-so-well.

What the hell was Kat thinking with those hideous boots and that headband?!  Lea, great dress, I just would prefer to see you without a fringe...

Kat Graham - oh dear!  Lea Michele - spot on!

NY fashion week

New York is the place to be at the moment. Fashion Week! My invites must have got lost in the post, so I'm having to make do with online browsing...  As always there are hits and misses in the style department.  Wonderful wearable outfits and hideous eyesores.

Zac Posen and Victoria Beckham are the best of the bunch so far.

Here are some of my favourites...

becoming a hoarder...

When it comes to clothes and shoes, I find it really hard to throw things out (or give to a charity shop). But I need space! I really need to through through my things and be ruthless. My dress rail is so full I can barely see what I have, and my shoes, well...

The thing is I like all my things, even if I only wear them once a year (or two). And because I have a daughter, I want to save classic items for her (vintage, darling), like my mum did for me. Fashion is indeed a cycle.

Vacuum bags I hear you cry! Yes, yes I've already got those full of my old clothes from the 90s.

Keep you clothes in seasons? Nah. Doesn't work here in sunny Queensland. Most of my wardrobe I can wear nine months of the year. Longer if I add a cardigan.

And my jeans/winter stuff is already stashed in one drawer, ready for next year.

That's the thing with classic styles and well made, fitted shapes. They are timeless, you can wear them repeatedly.

Stacked shoe boxes? Not a good option for me. I like to see my shoes, and they seem to get too dusty when packed away.

So what to do? God knows, I think I'll have to accept that I have become a hoarder!

are these the ugliest boots ever?

These Versace leather-trimmed mesh knee boots are revolting! Don't you agree? If you are mad enough to like them, you can buy them at www.net-a-porter.com for about $1,000.

A shoe design crime! Ugh.

shopping... again

What can I say.  I went to the shops today, just for an hour, before my morning coffee.  I just fancied a browse and some exercise (haha).  I wasn't intending to buy anything.  I'm still not excited about this in-between winter/spring season.  Nothing is making my heart race.  It's too much of a mish mash with no definite style. But...
Yes.  I bought something.  Well two somethings.  Pretty floral tea dresses that I know I'll wear and wear. One from Leona Edmison and the other from Cooper Street.
They look really nice on.  I'll wear one to work tomorrow.

today I am wearing...

I’m wearing one of my mum’s old 70s pendants today. It’s so cool, and brings back memories of being a little girl, sitting on her lap and playing with the chain mail links and loving how fluid and light it felt, how it sat in the contours of her cleavage. I have always been fascinated by breasts, even then, I use to have a tally of how many ‘real ones’ I’d seen. Funny...

I’m also wearing a long black Witchery dress and thongs. I have to do a big food shop later and I can’t manage the trolley in my heels. I feel like slobbing it today.

you'd never guess!

What a super find! Of all the spring wedges, this pair from Kmart are hard to beat! Not too high, light and comfy, and only $29! They come in a fab orange colour too! I'm telling you, I've tried on $150+ wedges that are identical to these!

today I am wearing...

I bought this Basque dress from Myer yesterday. I like the vibrant colour block contrast and the classic, nipped in at the waist design. But. Now I'm not so sure. Ever since Mr S said I looked like an flight attendant! I guess it does look a little like a uniform... So now I'm undecided.  I hate it when that happens...

new shoes

I'm in love with my new heels.  They are very high and are definitely not for walking far, more just sitting around with legs and heels on display.  I can't wait to wear them out. I keep putting them on and just wearing them round the bedroom...

tan brown nude beige

As you all know by now, I love nude shoes because they go with everything.  I find myself wearing a pair of my nude patent stilettos at least once a week, and in summer, my wedges too.

I popped to good old Tar-jay this morning, as I wanted to check out their new range of cheap Spring wedges. For under $40 they have numerous cool styles to choose from in lots of lovely bright colours; yellow, red, blue, black and the new nude alternative - tan!

Now I had intended to get some colour... but for pure wear-ability, it had to be the tan!

I bought two pairs. I'll wear them constantly. And the best bit - they only cost $14 each!!! I can't resist a bargain! So ladies, pop into Target and grab yourself a pair.

pretty pastel jeans

What do you think of the current pastel jeans trend? I think I like them. On other people. Those lucky enough to be blessed with slender thighs... So far, I have tried on a few pairs, and they have looked ridiculous on me. Okay I’ll admit I have been looking in the cheap end of the high street, mainly because, if I buy a pair or two, I won’t be wearing them for long. Not once the warm Spring weather is here, and they’ll be a new style next year.

The last time I owned jeans in a spectrum of colours was in the early 90s. In those days they had to be special dye Levi 501s (with the second button left undone, for some weird reason...), with crop tops and tiny t-shirts or mesh bodies. I loved my red pair and white pair the best.

I do love the pastel colours though, but a word of warning, if you are treating yourself to a pair, make sure you get a shade to suit your skin tone.

Just Jeans have a good range of colours, as shown below, but everywhere sells them.

today I am wearing...

Hello Monday!  The weekend went far too quickly.  I'm not ready for the new week.  But here we are. I felt like a bit of floral flowers today, so I'm wearing my Hot Options strapless dress, with a cardie and belt, and my lovely pearlescent heels. I love plum, it's such a rich, warm colour.

Have a great week dear followers!

fashion wants

I am not going to the shops. The temptation is too great. I must not spend any more money on clothes or heels. I am finding the pull hard to resist. But I must stay strong and deny myself...

Instead I am torturing myself by browsing online. I have honestly tried other distractions, but here am am sitting at the computer looking at beautiful things that I wish they were hanging in my wardrobe...

Today I would buy the following, for work, play, dressing up and just for whatever (and you can buy them too at Net a Porter)... I haven't added the prices, they'll just depress you. Let's just say they are above my suburban housewife limit.
