rock of ages... rocking hot?

Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, the fading 80s rock God, in Rock of Ages... shot for the June edition of W Magazine by Mario Sorrenti.  As always fabulous photography, and I have to admit, Tom looks pretty amazing for almost 50. But can I get over my dislike of Mr Cruise enough to enjoy this film?  We'll see... 

Tom said during the W shoot, “I didn’t want to imitate all these other rock stars. He (Stacee) had to be unique. If the audience doesn’t immediately buy into his absolute greatness, there’s no movie journey. Without that, you have nothing.” Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever Tom...

american psycho

It's an oldie, yes, but I love this film. It's one of the few movies that I actually prefer to the book (which I found too hard going), American Psycho, starring Christian Bale.


The controversial Bret Easton Ellis 1991 novel tells the story of serial killer and Wall Street yuppie Patrick Bateman, who revels in sick, sexual violence and torture. But he is slick and controlled and no doubt part inspiration for the writers of (the brilliant) TV series Dexter.

My favourite scene in the movie is the one involving business cards.  So cool! Anyway - if you haven't seen this movie from back in 2000, you must - it's a stylish classic.

one to watch... and nicole love

I'm looking forward to seeing this one... Nicole Kidman in the 'explosive sexual thriller', The Paperboy... According to Zac Efron, "It was everything you dreamed of. She was such a lovely person. I pinched myself every day, especially after doing love scenes (with Nic)... It was the highlight of my life." Cool! The movie opens at the end of the year. 

It'll be good to see Nic get her teeth into something again.

Her finest moment, for me, is in this Robbie William's Something Stupid video.  I love this so much, it's cheeky and flirty and fun!





And of course I adored her in Moulin Rouge. Nic and Ewan totally clicked and they look like they had such a good time. They both deserved Oscars for this film, they were bloody robbed!

w magazine does it again

I just love W Magazine (as you may have gathered by now!). I just love the retro glamour and stylish photography and gorgeous clothes (and shoes). 

The May issue features the beautiful Nicole Kidman & daper Clive Owen, shot by Emma Summerton, promoting their new HBO telemovie Hemingway & Gellhorn.


I'm so happy that Nic is happy and content now, after all the crap with Tom (gag), with the genuinely loveable Keith and their two little girls.

Nicole mentions Keith in the interview, "My husband says I'm raw. He thinks the world is not a great place for me because he fears that I'll be hurt. He says, That's my job: I'll protect you". Ahhh, so sweet...

And I loved how Keith explained his priorities in the April issue of The Australian Women's Weekly, "It's my wife and then my daughters. I just think it's really important for the kids." adding, "There are too many parents who start to lose the plot a little and start to give all their love to the kids, and then the partner starts to go without. And then everybody loses. As a kid, all I needed to know was that my parents were solid. Kids shouldn't feel like they are being favoured. It's a dangerous place." Well said Keith, I admire your honesty and think you are absolutely spot on.

Talking of Shortcuts (see previous post), the brilliant 1993 Robert Altman movie... 


Whenever I think about the film, I always picture the scene where Julianne Moore argues for ages (with her husband), without her knickers on!  I can't help it. 


I think, it stuck in my mind because I'd never seen ginger pubes before, and I found it quite fascinating (yes, I still have the mind of a 13 year old boy at times).  I also admired the way Julianne could act so brilliantly, knowing everyone would be staring at her undercarriage!


So here are a few pics of the beautiful Julianne Moore, she's gorgeous and a flippin good actress!

bored and waiting...

Easter Monday, dinner time. Absolutely no food in the house. Nothing open. I had no choice but to sit at the local take away, waiting for plastic pizza. I felt like I was playing a part in a movie. Bored of waiting, staring into space, trying to avoid more polite chit chat with the lady opposite me (leave me alone Missy), I had one of those surreal out of the body experiences where I could see myself...


It was the humming fluorescent lighting, cheap bolted down chairs, and really quite unappetising meal-deal posters, that did it. My mind just wandered off. I felt like I was in a scene from Lost in Translation (but obviously not in Japan), Clerks or Shortcuts (bloody good film). The clientele and the staff playing their parts perfectly (strange creatures).  


Then my 20 minute wait was up and I had to shake myself back to reality... BTW the pizza wasn't too bad!

we need to talk about...

I'm probably behind the times, but I spent the Easter weekend finally reading Lionel Shriver's novel We Need to Talk About Kevin. Then, the day I finished the book I went out and hired the DVD and watched the movie starring Tilda Swinton, as I needed more... 


On finishing the book, I did wonder how they would condense it into a film, pondering on how they'd script it... I knew it'd be a challenge, but I was expecting something special.


So... My review? Predictably I loved the book, but the movie was, aghh, so disappointing! Tilda of course is fabulous and perfect in every way. But the rest of the film felt rushed and just didn't even scratch the surface of the intense relationships between the four main characters. The sets, such as their New York loft and the cold, vast contemporary house didn't match what I'd imagined, and they just skipped so much of the story, that the film was empty and Eva came across as a weak void.  It wasn't any where near slick enough. It was watery and vague.  Whereas the book was so strong and compelling and rich and sad. An emotional rollercoaster left me questioning my own relationships and how I would cope in Eva's situation.  And the ending, it was perfect.   


I could talk for hours over this story, it definitely promotes discussion. But I don't want to say to much more about the story as it will ruin it for those yet to read the book. 

What I will say, is how much I identified with Eva, Kevin's mother, a lot. Her carefree, passionate life rich in adventure and experience, prior to children. Her love for her husband and their urban, professional life. Her grief for their past life together once Kevin is born, and how she struggles when motherhood does not come naturally. 


If you haven't read We Need to Talk About Kevin I wholeheartedly recommend that you do, just don't bother with the film.

Not blown away by the movie adaptation. Although Tilda can do no wrong.
